Density Measurements

Density Measurements
Density of slips, glazes and formed product are tested on a daily basis. The different techniques require alternative pieces of equipment. Apparent Density of “raw” samples is measured using a traditional “Doulton Densometer” mercury bath, whereas the most common method for density of ceramic slip (slurry) is carried out using a viscometer or pyknometer, the latter being available in various different sizes.
Plasticity or “workability” of clays can be monitored in the laboratory or on the factory floor using one of the range of Hardness testers available.
